How to Block or Allow Pop-Ups on Your Mac

Ads are the most pronounced forms of advertising on the internet today. However, they sometimes become annoying. In this article, you will learn how to enable or block pop-ups on your Mac. Moreover, the Safari browser on your Mac can easily be configured to suit your needs.

Using Safari to Block Pop-ups

It is not everyone who enjoys pop-ups. At times, they make your computer slow or interrupt your work, which is very irritating. Other pop-ups make use of phishing methods while others act as a way to trick you to download malware onto your computer.

How to block them

On your Mac, navigate to the Safari browser and open it. Once the browser opens, navigate to its menu and select the preferences option. From the menu that pops –up, select the website option. Navigate to the left sidebar and select the pop-up window. It is in this option that you will be able to see open sites. The settings of these websites can easily be adjusted. If there are pop-ups that you would want to block, look for the option of “when visiting other websites.” This option is found at the window’s bottom. You will find the option to Block and the option to Block and Notify.

Block and Notify Option

The block and notify option always notify you when a pop-up has been blocked. In an instance where there is a pop-up blocker in Safari, the browser will shortly tell you that a pop- up window has been blocked. This message can also be displayed on the browser’s search field. This message is also displayed on the address bar.

Block Option

By clicking on the small window icon, you can allow pop-ups if you wish to do so. However, the block option works differently from the block and notify option. When you select the block option, the browser will automatically barricade the pop-ups from showing on your computer. However, you will not be notified when this happens. In some instances, you might be getting pop-ups even after blocking the websites. In such cases, you should realize that your device could be having some malware. Essentially, it is advisable to turn on the Fraudulent Website Warning option.

To do this, just navigate to your browser preferences and select the security option.

Allowing Pop-Ups in Safari

In some cases, it may be necessary to allow pop-ups. At times, some websites do not work correctly when pop-ups have been disabled. In such a case, pop-up blockers need to be disabled. Pop-ups do not always indicate malware. Even some legit websites display web content in such pop-ups. It is possible to access the option to allow pop-ups from a certain website. To do this, it is recommended that you open a site with blocked pop-ups.

Completely Turning Off Pop-Ups from All Sites

You first need to select your Safari browser and open it. Once it is open, navigate to the browser’s preferences. Navigate to the website tab. On the menu that appears on the left side, select the pop-up windows option. Select the allow option to allow pop-ups from all sites. Safari, unlike other browsers, disables pop-ups by default. If you want to change this option, you can always configure the browser differently.

Pop-ups are not only annoying but also, they may be used as a way to allow malicious software into your computer. It is due to such cases that you may need to bock them. In other instances, you might be forced to allow them to properly use some websites. To do so, follow the instructions in this article and you will successfully allow or block pop-ups
